Situated along the northern gateway into the historic port city of Fremantle, DHA’s Liv Apartments are a contemporary new apartment complex comprising three uniquely designed buildings located in the new East Side of Fremantle, Western Australia. The project will transform a rundown former car yard site into an attractive, contemporary, mixed-use development, adding diversity and character to the local area. Designed by award winning international design firm HASSELL, Liv has luxurious materials and finishes and two street frontages on Queen Victoria Street and Quarry Street. The DHA’s development project is required to spend 1% of the construction cost on public art in accordance with the City of Fremantle’s Percent for Art Policy.
The artwork is Fremantle’s largest and most significant public art project in a decade. The artwork occupies a transitional threshold space in the entrance arcade. Using parabolic modeling the artist team has integrated the artwork into the architecture of the building; the artwork’s faceted, geometric skin covering the passageway soffit and wrapping around vertical planes and columns. Beautiful during the day, at night the artwork lights up with fluctuating hues and saturations of light, with over 850 individually programmable light nodes at each panel intersection.
Apparatus was engaged to curate and manage the public art component of this ambitious residential development and was responsible for managing the Percent for Art process in consultation with the City of Fremantle.
