Jarni McGuire approached Apparatus to assist her with the development of an Artwork Concept Proposal (ACP) for a public art project located at PTA/METRONET’s new trains stations on the Yanchep Line Extensions.
The intent of the commission was for the artist to create a concept proposal, including specifications of materials, patterns, colours and design, that are, recognisable on entry to the station and to enhance the existing architectural design.
Jarni’s inspiration for the ceiling artwork design is the Melaleuca paperbark tree that is found throughout Alkimos. Melaleucas were extremely important to Noongar people. Large pieces were used for shelter, smaller pieces were used to carry water and wrap food, and the leaves could be crushed for the medicinal properties of the oil, which could be brewed as a healing tea.
Just like the culture and stories of Noongar people, the Melaleuca bark has many layers. As the paper bark peels away, we can see the heart of tree is Waugyl, the rainbow serpent who created the fresh waterways and connects all lakes and water systems.
The material used for the artwork is perforated anodised aluminium, the patterns chosen represent the texture of the Waugyl’s skin. The light will be used to reinforce the power of the Waugyl as it moves through the space.
