Esperance Indoor Sports Stadium Mural
The new Esperance Indoor Sports Stadium is a $7.8 million facility, a major construction program developed as part of the Greater Sports Ground Redevelopment. Completed in July 2020, the New Esperance Indoor Stadium is now open and enjoyed by the community. The Shire wanted to enhance the community asset by developing a mural on the building exterior. Apparatus was engaged to develop a curatorial plan, undertake stakeholder consultation, procurement and project management.
Curtin University School of Design and the Built Environment
Curtin University has undergone a significant expansion to become a vibrant, mixed use hub that shifted away from the typical university campus paradigm. The new School of Design and the Built Environment (B418) at Curtin’s Bentley campus was part of this planned change. In 2020, Lendlease approached Apparatus to collaborate on two artwork projects that have become integral to characterising the culture of the site and the pedagogy of the building.
Perth Children’s Hospital Greenspace
Inspired by the healing energy of Country, the new nature-space next to Perth Children’s Hospital incorporates traditional and contemporary cultural themes into its design. The name – Waalbiirniny Waabiny Boodja – was developed by Noongar cultural advisors, Soft Earth. In Noongar language, Waalbiirniny means ‘to heal’, Waabiny means ‘to play’ and Boodja means ‘on Country’.
Liv Apartments Artwork
Apparatus was engaged to curate and manage the public art component of this ambitious residential development and was responsible for managing the Percent for Art process in consultation with the City of Fremantle.
North Perth Robotopia
The resulting artwork Robotopia by artist SI Hummerston is a series of four brightly coloured and finely detailed ‘retro-bots’ located along the Fitzgerald Street spine, designed to structure and punctuate the pedestrian experience and add a playful element to the streetscape.
Exchange Precinct Artworks
Curtin University is currently undergoing significant expansion to become a vibrant, mixed-use hub that shifts away from the typical university campus paradigm. The ambition of public art within Exchange at Curtin University was to make places that are fertile for creativity, critical thinking, and interaction. Public art within a precinct such as Exchange, Stage One want to embody and reflects the intellectual and creative ambitions of that place, creating a tangible and human scale experience.
Esperance Civic Centre Artworks
The Esperance Civic Centre Artwork Project was proposed by the Shire of Esperance as a project that will provide the Esperance community with a stimulating experience on visiting the Civic Centre venue and define the building as a visual attraction. The project was part of an ongoing renovation program to modernise the centre, which was first opened during the early 1980s. The Shire commissioned Western Australian Artist Team Chris Nixon and Andrew Frazer to design and deliver a new public artwork located on the façade and entrance of the Esperance Civic Centre.
Lakelands Station Artworks
Lakelands Station helps ease the growing demand for public transport in the southern suburbs. Residents in Lakelands, Madora Bay and surrounds have a new travel option to choose from with the newest Mandurah Line station being built in Lakelands. Apparatus collaborated with the consultant team and worked with the PTA and METRONET Teams to develop the Sense of Place Statement and Public Art Plan to deliver the Public Art Program.

Belmont Park Public Art
Apparatus were engaged to work on a consultant team assisting with the delivery of the Stage 1 Place Activation Plan. This was developed by PLACE Laboratory in collaboration with Apparatus (Public Art +Interpretation Plan), Village Well (Community Development Plan), Emerge (Landscape Plan), and Brain and Poulter (Retail Strategy).
Ocean Reef Marina Public Art and Interpretation Plan
Apparatus was awarded the contract to work in collaboration with UDLA on integrating public art and interpretative elements into the public realm design. Apparatus will be working with DevelopmentWA, UDLA, the Wadjuk Working Party, and the City of Joondalup on integrating public art design, utilising the salvaged materials where possible and responding to the Heritage studies and reports through interpretative elements.
