Esperance Civic Centre Artworks

The Esperance Civic Centre Artwork Project was proposed by the Shire of Esperance as a project that will provide the Esperance community with a stimulating experience on visiting the Civic Centre venue and define the building as a visual attraction. The project was part of an ongoing renovation program to modernise the centre, which was first opened during the early 1980s. The Shire commissioned Western Australian Artist Team Chris Nixon and Andrew Frazer to design and deliver a new public artwork located on the façade and entrance of the Esperance Civic Centre. The project was a continuation of the Civic Centre renovation program, which has seen major interior upgrades, repainting the roof and rendering of the exterior brick walls. The renovation program was extended to include a façade mural and an entrance lighting feature. The Artist Brief asked artists to develop an artwork that “…will be welcoming day and night and will become a landmark and a source of pride for the community.” The artists were asked to consider the diversity of the Civic Centre’s functions and develop a design that is conscious of and can facilitate the Centre’s many uses.

  • I collaborated with Andrew Frazer on the Esperance Civic Centre Public Artwork, curated by Helen Curtis at Apparatus. The way Helen became part of the community in Esperance and genuinely cared about the outcome and our process was beautiful to be a part of and to witness.

Andrew and I still talk about that experience of the project as being a highlight of our career, from all the challenges to overcome to the laughs and successes and being embraced by the community. A big reason for that was Helen’s guiding hand and experience.

A real pleasure to work with.
