Byford Rail Extension Public Artworks and Interpretative Plan

Those living and working in Byford will soon have a new transport choice with the future station location, 8kms south of Armadale Station. Apparatus is on the MetCONNX Alliance Design Team including Laing O’Rourke, Hames Sharley, Weston Williams and UDLA. In the first stage of works, Apparatus delivered the Sense of Place Statement, which wanted to highlight the history, culture and traditions of the Byford community to set the basis for future artworks. Successively Apparatus provided the Public Art Plan, developed in close collaboration with all related consultancy disciplines, METRONET and the Office of the Government Architect. The PAP refined the public art opportunities which comprises five public artworks.

Eight Western Australian and Noongar artists have been awarded for delivering these complex and meaningful artworks which will impactfully improve the new infrastructure.

These artworks will be inspired by Aboriginal heritage, local culture, and natural beauty, with input from Aboriginal Elders and the local community. The actual stage design and development will involve refining artistic concepts, ensuring the artworks are well-integrated into the station and rail environments and aligning them with the cultural significance of the local community.

These artworks will blend cultural storytelling, natural motifs, and community engagement, transforming the rail extension into a vibrant, cultural landmark while celebrating the Noongar people and the local environment.
