Kambarang – Six Seasons Bidi

Jarni McGuire’s artwork represent Kambarang, using towering bronze forms to evoke the warran yams, traditionally cultivated in this season, as well as the female form.

Season: Kambarang
  • Wildflower season – season of birth
  • October – November
  • The Noongar Season ‘Kambarang’ is represented by the colour yellow as it symbolises the return of the hot weather.
Concept Rationale

“Kambarang; being the season of birth, evokes my maternalism.

Hearing Nanna Vivienne Hansen share her knowledge about bush medicines and the role women have taken through the season Kambarang, I wanted to find a way to honour our women.

Traditionally, women were the main providers of our food. One of the foods which women dug up were the Warrang Yam.

My artwork is a response to reflecting on my experience as a woman and a mother and how my body has changed over time through this.

I love sharing my culture, I love learning and as I continue on this path of learning about my people, my culture and my community.” – Jarni McGuire
