Bringing Art to Life
Peregrination: A Journey is a major new public artwork for the Armadale Station Precinct, created by the Peregrination Collective. Commissioned by MetCONNX on behalf of METRONET, this large-scale lighting and mural artwork transforms the elevated rail into a vibrant landmark celebrating Noongar culture, native ecology, and the spirit of movement that defines Armadale.
The Peregrination Collective are: Mel McVee (Melski), Haylee Fieldes (Fieldey), Amok Island, Seantelle Walsh (Kardy Kreations), and David Sparrow (Light Application).
A Journey in Motion
Spanning the entire 1.5 kilometre viaduct, Peregrination features a vast series of murals and a 70-square-metre integrated lighting soffit artwork at the Armadale Station. The design draws inspiration from the concept of a journey, reflecting the train line as a symbol of movement through time and space. Its flowing forms and layered composition echo the contours of the Darling Scarp, the tributaries that run from the hills to the river, and the pathways that connect communities across Country.
Layers of Country
The artwork unfolds across four ecological zones: River, Wetlands, Bush, and Scarp. Each zone represents a distinct aspect of the local environment and its relationship to the Noongar seasons. Within these layers, Seantelle Walsh’s icons honour Noongar history and storytelling, grounding the work in culture and deep time. The visual language of the mural combines colour, texture, and patterning inspired by native flora and fauna, creating a rich narrative that celebrates the biodiversity and cultural identity of the region.
Journey Through Light and Water
At the station entry, the soffit artwork forms the spectacular centrepiece, which brings together painted murals and lighting. The mural artwork, painted by Amok Island, features a family of Oblong turtles swimming into the station, a keystone species in Western Australian wetlands, swimming through tannin-stained waters beneath a field of twinkling light. The lighting, designed by David Sparrow, is housed in 76 aluminium panels beneath the viaduct, programmed to shimmer like sunlight on water, guiding visitors towards the station while adding movement and atmosphere to the public space.
The Viaduct Art Trail
Throughout the viaduct, the collective’s distinct artistic styles are woven together into a seamless and cohesive composition. Each zone highlights local fauna, through Haylee Fieldes’ impressively realistic animals, such as the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo, Quenda, Carnaby Cockatoo, Australian Wood Duck, and White-faced Heron, alongside native vegetation like banksia, bullrushes, and knotweed, painted by Mel McVee. Together, these elements form a continuous visual journey that embodies the project’s overarching theme of Gnarla Biddi, pathways and connection across Country.
Peregrination: A Journey defines Armadale’s new civic gateway, enriching the urban landscape with colour, culture, and light. It weaves culture, history, and nature, and is essentially Armadale.
