Apparatus recently completed works to relocate Rock Solid Foundations from ECU Mount Lawley campus to Joondalup campus.
Rock Solid Foundations (RSF) was installed in 2011 to commemorate 60 years since the first Aboriginal graduate and the establishment of the Indigenous Alumni community. With the imminent closure of the Mount Lawley campus, it is desirous to retain and relocate this important work. Consisting of eight large granite stones weighing between 500kg and 1.5 tonne, required careful planning and coordination.
It was a real family affair for the stones. Apparatus worked with Shane Thomas, whose brother Chris Thomas installed the stones to undertake the relocation and restoration works along with Chris’ wife Waraporn Thomas who painted the stones originally and assisted with the restoration. Shane’s brother Edward Thomas and nephew Jesse Fleay both have their names engraved on the stones as graduates.
In addition, Apparatus collaborated with Land Surveys to replicate the constellation layout of the stones in the new location, Capital House provided engineering advice to ensure the new location atop the underground carpark was structurally sound and Luke Davey of Artitectus provided superintendency services.
