Goongoongup mural installation tells three layers of a story based on keywords developed in a community workshop with residents.
Starting from the pillars, the seven designs represent energy passing through us, stories that connect us, intersectionality, water flowing between the land and the sky, songlines, the nine lake systems and finally the flow of life.
The seating area – the yarning circle – features designs of people’s passions and individuality while the centre block is about diversity. The half-yarning circle includes aspirations as seeds and justice as circles.
The wall design is a map of Derbal Yerrigan (Swan River) which is environmentally and spiritually significant to Noongars. The location where St Bart’s sits was a ceremonial ground with a cluster of camps. The wall artwork also represents belonging and us being ‘connected to everywhere, attached to nowhere’ which aligns with traditional seasonal movement.
